Do you build retaining walls on Freshwater's steep headland blocks?

Yes, steep headland blocks are the core of what we do in Freshwater. We assess the slope and terrace the site to create the flat pad, lawn or parking area you are after. On very steep blocks a tiered set of walls often works better than one tall wall, and taller walls may need engineering. We build to the engineered design where one is required.

Will you hit sandstone rock when excavating in Freshwater?

Quite often, yes. Much of Freshwater sits on shallow Hawkesbury sandstone under thin soil, so rock excavation with saws or breakers is common. The upside is that footings and posts can frequently be founded into competent sandstone, which makes for a strong, stable base. We assess the ground on site before quoting so rock risk is discussed upfront.

Does a beachside Freshwater wall need special steel because of the salt air?

It is a sensible choice. Freshwater's east-facing beachside blocks sit in salt-laden marine air, so we specify galvanised or durable-grade steel for H-posts, reo and fixings. These are corrosion-resistant components suited to a coastal setting. We would never call any steel immune to corrosion, but the right specification gives your wall a much better working life near the beach.

Why is drainage so important on a Freshwater retaining wall?

Freshwater's steep blocks concentrate runoff, and if water builds up behind a wall the hydrostatic pressure it creates is the number-one cause of retaining-wall failure. To prevent that we install an agi-drain along the base, backfill with free-draining aggregate, wrap it in geofabric so soil fines cannot clog the drain, and add weep holes where they suit. Getting the drainage right is the difference between a wall that lasts and one that bulges.

Do I need council approval for a retaining wall in Freshwater?

It depends on the wall. Walls over about a metre high, or walls carrying a surcharge such as a driveway, pool or building near the top, generally need engineering design and certification to AS4678 and often council approval or a Complying Development Certificate. The engineer designs the wall, Northern Beaches Council or a private certifier approves it, and we build to that design. We can arrange or advise on the engineer and certifier.
